Rates for commercial... Can't Post

Hello all...I need help. I have been asked to film/edit a 30 second commercial to be aired on TV for a finance company. My question is should I charge by an hour rate or charge a flat rate for the finished product?? And what should my rates be?? I live in the Athens, Ohio area. I will have no out of pocket expense except for the DV tapes that I use to film...it will be a basic commercial filmed on location 3 miles from my house. The company is providing the "voice" for the spot, so basicly I will be out the $$ for the blank DV tapes and my time that it takes to film/edit project. Any help on pricing would be greatly appreciated...I don't want to overcharge/undercharge for the project and lose their interest in my services. Thank you in advance.

Find out what your local cable company is charging for a similar commercial. Here in northern Virginia, the cable company will shoot and edit a basic no-frills commercial for $250. They make all their money on selling the air time. Makes it hard to compete in this market!

Dont forget that you also have the exspense to copy the commercial to
Beta since most stations dont accept MiniDV tapes. Only Beta.
Also, like Doug said, It's hard to compete with the local stations
what you have to do is sell them on quality. Show them the difference
between a locally done commercial and a national commercial. Theres
a big difference. Just make sure you can do the quality of a national
commercial

First of all, if you going to use MiniDV format, then you are going
to tape a commercial not film one. You can always who is new in this
business, by the terms they use.
Oh, I can hear the hate mail now. Hey be easy on the new guy. Why
should I? Are the clients going to be easy on you and expect anything
less than a professional looking commercial. To some business owners
having a commercial produced is run-of-the-mill SOP. For others, the
money they spend for production is just as important as the air time.
Who wants a shotty, amateurish looking spot. Image is everything. Your rates should be
reasonable. Do you have a lot of experience shooting commercials.
Why should they pay you X dollars for shooting their commericials?
There's more to video production that having a camera and a PC.
And a lot of TV stations that use DVCPro also have adapters that playback
MiniDV tapes. There's also a setting in the menu of DVCPro decks
that set between, DVCPro, MiniDV, and DVCam tapes.
Hope this helps.
