Selling commercial time during tv Can't Post

Hello, my company is in the pre production process of putting together a 30 minute tv show that will air on local cable around the Fort Lauderdale area. The show is coming together nicely, however, my question pertains to the commercial and sponsor time. Since we'll be buying the half hour blocks, in order to make our money back we need to sell sponsorship "Product of the day" segements and commercial time. What would an appropriate range be for approaching companies cold? The companies that we are going to approach have the same target audiences as our show will, so we want to convince them to buy some advertising time in the show. Would appropriate rates be a matter of a few hundred or closer to a few thousand?
The show's span will be 13 episodes, 30 minutes each. If we offer a company a slate "brought to you buy...." and two or three commercial spots for each of the 13 episodes, where would I begin to figure out the appropriate charge for that?
Any help would be great, thank you.

First, I'm not in the "selling side" of television, I'm on the producing side, but I can tell you that rates for commercial times are pretty much dependent on audience draw. How many viewers your show is expected to draw along with what time slot and day of the week all play a role in determining rates. Your best bet is to contact a represenative at one of the stations that will be airing your show and let them help you figure the rates. You could also contact a media buyer at an ad agency and let them guide you as well. Good luck with your program.

I have no idea how your local market works, but...
Could you SELL the show to the cable stations, instead of buying airtime for it? Then the stations could sell the commercial spots to recover the cost of your show.

Well, I can write about this with some experience. I have a wedding show on cable in New England. We use the show as a pseudo-marketing tool for our wedding video biz. We sell advertising for a measley $75 per 30 second spot, and even that is too tough for me to sell :) I put an ad in a local film/video website looking for a salesperson to sell the commercials on (very small) commission. I am shocked by the type of person we found this way. The woman is a big-time salesperson who wants to help! We will see how it turns out.

Ray,

I am also producing a wedding television show out of Oklahoma City. I would love to talk to you further about how you market and sell your show.
