So I missed a few shots... Can't Post

I want to know if this only happens to me or what.. I am shooting a graduation, and between the time to change battery and tape, I missed taping 2 graduating students. With my luck, one of them had ordered the cassette and then demanded her money back. Please let me hear of your experiences and apart from having a second camera what can I do to avoid this problem. Can it really ever be avoided ?
Thank
Laura

We always cover an event like this, where individuals only have a brief "moment of glory", with two cameras. Otherwise you are sure to miss something. Apologize and cheerfully refund their money; after all, they didn't get what they paid for: A video memory of their proud moment.
A wedding reception is a bit different. There, you can say, "OK, I missed a couple of good shots. But I still have all the OTHER good shots to make up for it." Likely the bride will never notice what's missing. If it's the vows, or the walk down the aisle, that's another matter! And again, for "must have" shots like that, we use two cameras.
Regards,
Doug Graham

It depends on what you're shooting with. The easiest solution is to have two cameras. If you can't do that then you need to have something like an NRG battery belt that will last the entire shoot. If you're using mini DV then you need to have a deck that you can record out through the firewire or S cable.
In short, yes you can avoid these problems ... but what happens if you have a bad tape? (It DOES happen.) The second camera is a lifesaver.
