Starting a new business Can't Post

A few months ago I started a business doing little league highlight videos, which has gone pretty good thus far. I want to make sure I do everything by the book as far as a business goes. What steps do I need to get my business set up...license, tax id, insurance...etc etc? I will be running the business out of my home, so is there anything having to do with that that I need to look into. Another thing is, I would like to start doing weddings as well . What training videos or books do you recommend? Who do you see about getting a contract set up or do you just do it yourself? By "contract" I mean a contract a customer would sign before you start the project. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hal sells a good wedding video book and a companion DVD right here on the site. The book includes a sample contract.

Another good resource is EventDV magazine. A few months ago, they published a sample contract, and you may be able to find the article on their web page.

For information on starting a business, you need to contact your local government; the requirements are different in different states, and even sometimes in different counties or cities. For example, here in Stafford, VA, I don't need a business license, but I did need to get a zoning variance from the county board to operate a business out of my home. Whether or not you need to collect sales tax also varies depending on your location.

It's a good idea to carry property insurance on your equipment. Make sure that the policy covers stuff while its out in the field on a shoot, as well as at home in your studio. You also need a liability policy, to protect you in case you accidentally injure someone. There are lots of good insurance choices; do a search on "insurance" on the forums here and you'll find a lot of advice.

Besides a trip to your local government offices, you should draw up a business plan. This is a document in which you decide what your business will be called, what market you'll target, how you will market, what your competition looks like, how you will get start-up funding, what your goals will be, and all other aspects of your business. Your local library should have plenty of info on this, and every other aspect of starting a small business.

I'd recommend Wedding Video For Profit
which includes a book and a CD ROM with 11 Wedding Contracts.

You should also check out the DVD entitled
Video Guide to Professional Wedding Videography

These products both come with my 90 Day Money Back Guarantee. Give me a call if you'd like more information.

Re: [hlanden] Starting a new business [In reply to] Can't Post

I just called in an ordered Wedding Video for Profit about 5 minutes ago. Took me loong enuf! Im a new business also. Ive already gotten all of the city, county requirements out of the way. Simple stuff. It helps to actually work at the County Administrators Office as I do. :) First thing I bought befire I started was the DVD offered here that tells you the basics of how to shoot wedding/event video. It had sample videos as well. EXCELLENT DVD! It helped me book my first 2 gigs within a month after I started the business.

Im startin part time and will build up. The first 2 gigs under my belt are: First one was a wedding/reception, the second gig believe it or not was a "funeral".

Now that Ive got the business established, I need to move forward with the details. This book and cd will help me tremendously.

Thanks
