You need to take a staff gig for quite a while first so you'll know what's going on. Figure out exactly what you wanna do and go from there.
To own your own company you really have to know every aspect of the business (especially what gear you need).

I'm interested in 'stage' performance shooting e.g.shooting and editing theatre productions...
And perhaps try my luck in production of short movies and documentaries in the long run..
Please provide the basic,perfect equipment which will do the above for a start....

Look into mini DV camcorders and look at DV NLEs like Premiere Pro, Vegas and FCP.
