Stupid Business Tactics Can't Post

A while back, we discussed the shady ethics of a videographer who had registered several domain names similar to his competitor's, and used them to redirect people to his own site.

It turns out that he's not the only videographer who's used this tactic. There's another one doing the same thing, and worse. In some cases, the visitor to a domain name similar to the competitor's is redirected to a porn site. I will not name the villain, or the competitor who's suffering this assault, since we don't allow personal attacks here. But I did want to make a statement regarding this sort of behavior in general:

It is simply shameful. Anyone who engages in business tactics of this sort has no ethics, moral standards, or character. I hope nobody here on VU ever stoops to this sort of thing.

I am intereste din how you connect the videographer to the porn site? Is it his porn site? Is the domain in his name? Lots of high traffic sites have to contend with this "side squatting" by porn sites, including whitehouse.com

registrant's contact email is the same as the registrant for the suspect videographer's web domain.

Redirecting to a porn site is slimey.

Maybe you can suggest to Hal that we have a vu code of conduct that includes how "graduates" behave in the real world. I have noticed that most (not all) of the entrants into the marketplace lately are more interested in money than art and doing more for oneself than the customer. You know from having to prune my posts that this is one of my major bugbears. If people are most interested in money there are a lot of other areas where they can make money without ruining the couple's memories of a unique day.
If you are building a list of donny don'ts then you can start with my own fault- slagging people off in public. I may think it's called for but it never has the desired effect.

Unfortunately, a Code of Ethics (or Conduct) is only as good as the body that enforces it. I see CoE violations go unchecked at most levels of organization, local, internet, international.
