Think about it for a minute. Marketing is a least half the game and more than half the cost. What did you pay in advertising per customer? If someone were to set up a sales call for you, what you pay her - $25, $50, $75? I'm interested to hear what you think the number should be.

A better proposal would be to earn 10% of the gross budget for every job you sell. You sell a $35,000 project and I'll pay you $3,500.

Just curious, where does everyone get the best response.
advertising? such as yellow pages etc. or word of mouth, trade shows, direct mail?
just curious what works around the country.

The answer for me is -
1. Word of Mouth from Previuos customers - Free
2. Friends and family - Discounted services
3. Trade shows - rather expensive
4. Websites - Inexpensive.

word of mouth is not only free, people pay you to do it. It's also much more believable than some bogus ad trying to sell you something. Yellow page ads only bring moms who want cd duplication or their home videos transfered to DVD. It's just not worth messing with unless vhs stuff is what your into.
It's best just to give clients something they can't get anywhere else in town then let them tell others about you.

Okay, if Word-of-Mouth works then everybody here is driving BMWs and nobody has a mortgage because it's already paid, right? Even if word of mouth gets you two added customers for every existing customer, you still need to go out and get more customers (i.e. advertise) until you are doing all the work you can handle. No who has extra capacity should be waiting for word of mouth. He/she has to sacrifice some profits to get the word out. I would set aside 10-15% of the total gross ensure a continued flow of new customers. If you buy my logic the big Q becomes where to put the money.
