Aren't these more or less the same as the videographer awards, aurora awards, and the others where you essentially purchase your winning?

Well...

1. Not exactly. Like most of these award programs, there is an entry fee. But the Tellys have been around longer than any of the others and have more prestige attached.

2. "...where you essentially purchase your winning." I disagree with this statement. All of the award programs that I've looked into are "real" award programs. You compete against a set of standards and are judged by a panel of experts. Submission of an entry and a fee are no guarantee of a win.(There ARE a couple of programs that look pretty shady, but the Videographer, Telly, Communicator, and Aurora programs are legit.)

I think what puts most people off is that with these programs you have to pay an entry fee, and if you win you are encouraged to buy the trophy. That's not an indicator of a "fake" program, it's only the way in which they fund it. Programs like the Oscars are funded from Academy members' dues. I don't see how that makes them any more or less legitimate than programs where the entrants pay their own way.

Not this year. I got nothin' worth sending in. Unsure

But as soon as I'm happy with a couple of animation projects I'm working on, they might be candidates for one of the award programs.

Hi Andrew,
They are legit. We've won several of them over the years. Al just won another one for a video he produced for the Hospital he works for.
He submits regularly but doesn't always win.

Re: [jhart] Telly Awards [In reply to] Can't Post

well you don't "purchase your win" I entered two this year, one personal that didn't win, and one from work that qualified for a Bronze Telly, just like the first video in this series.

Trying to find out what their "criteria" is, a bit more concrete than what I can find in print. doubt I will get a straight answer. the one that won was 'flashier', more special effects, composities, moving backgrounds, but the one that didnt had more unique content.

as for being worthless, in my situation, having the statue on the shelf is tangible proof to my superiors/clients, that I have a clue what i'm doing.

I agree. Any award you can get by paying an entrance fee and one that is not judged against others is not someting I put much value on. If your work is of reasonable quality, I do not see the need for telly awards.

Hey, I was asked to judge camera work for the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences one year and was shocked to see how prevalent lobbying was, and how decisions on work were made by employee dedication i.e. x network votes for x networks entries, not talent ...

So, if I don't put much stock in emmys, this deal is Telly saying send me the money and Who loves you babe? Here you go, aww enter again. Who loves you?

Think of all the years Woody Allen won the oscar for best directing and wouldn't attend the cerimony because he was usually playing jazz clarinet in a dinky club. He didn't like the awards because he didn't like the process....

Re: [UberHomer] Telly Awards [In reply to] Can't Post

These are common misconceptions.

1. Entrance fees. Some people see this as "buying an award". Not so. Any awards program must have some way to finance itself, if the costs are not to come out of the organizers' pockets. The Oscars are financed through the dues paid by the members of the Motion Pictures Academy. The Tellys, and other similar programs, are financed through fees paid by the entrants. Some other programs are financed through contributions by sponsors. No method is "better" than the others, just different ways of raising the money to meet the program's expenses.

2. Judging. You can judge entries against each other, like the Oscars. There can only be one "Best Picture", after all. But there are drawbacks...sometimes entries are very different from each other; how do you determine which one is "better"? The other way to judge entries is against a set of standards. To my mind, this is more equitable, especially if measures are taken to "even out" the scores awarded by the judges -- for example, by throwing out the high and low scores.

Hi Andrew,

Yes, we entered XSTV a few years back - its not a shoe-in just because you paid for the submission - you are up against stiff competition.

Its a ligit award, and yes we won a category and had to buy the trophy, etc. No big deal on that, after all someone has to cover costs.

Hello There,

Can anyone give me a hint as to where these awards take place? Do you have to be American to participate?

Re: [videobear] Telly Awards [In reply to] Can't Post

Gotta pass this along. As I stated previously I entered two videos, one got a Bronze the other didn't. I emailed and asked exactly what critieria the judge's used when judging in against a "Standard of Excellence." The response I received has left me with little respect for these "awards."

To paraphrase, only because I don't have the email with me at the moment, was "the judges look at everything from top to bottom." Now THAT is a detailed list of criteria eh? When I was president of the NJAPBA back in the 80's we judged other state's entries and we had a list of things we looked at, and rated them on; writing, use of sound, etc.

So take it for what its worth. it is a nice looking statuette though, for $150
