Weddings - seasonal work? Can't Post

Hi All.

Firstly, let me just say what a great forum this is. At the moment, I'm running the hamster wheel of the usual 9-5 job (PM for a telco in the UK). My ideal would be to get out there, like the rest of you, and turn what is currently a hobby into a business and earn some bucks (well Pounds Sterling) out of it. Ah yes, to avoid confusion, the hobby I'm speaking of is filming and editing video Wink.

My question - I accept that the market in the US/Canada/World may be slightly different to here in the UK, but what months constitute the wedding 'season'? In the UK, most people plump for May thru' September, mainly down the weather I suppose. Is that the same elsewhere?

What do you guys do out of the wedding season to pay the bills?

Would be nice to hear if there any (m)any other people from the UK on this forum too.

Weddings can occur at any time, but you're right, they do tend to be seasonal.

Since I have a full time day job, I don't worry about it. Other videographers use the time to attend bridal shows and catch up on their editing backlog.

Others (maybe a majority of the full-timers) offer additional services. There are other types of events to cover (dance recitals, plays, school sporting events). There are video photo albums, video duplication services, transfer of film, photos, and video to DVDs. There's legal video (depositions, "day in the life" videos, accident re-creations). Then there's the whole broad arena of corporate video, including sales meeting coverage, instructional tapes, and marketing videos. (Hal, the founder of Video University, has a home study course for this field that's highly regarded).

Thanks Doug. I think I'll have to give Hal's course a look.

Is there much of a market for home video to DVD services these days? Especially when everyman and his dog seem to have PCs/Macs with DVD-writers and basic editing software.

I have thought the same thing, but finding out that a majority of people are technically ignorant (the flashing 12:00 on the VCR). Plus, how many actually have analog inputs (or even know that they are needed). I would image that eventually things will catch up (just like with everything else) but for now, take it while the taking is good. In fact, I just got another call today from a past customer to transfer a few more 8mm video tapes to DVD and another is picking up 5 DVDs (that were transferred) and dropping another 5 tapes to convert (her total so far is 12 DVDs....).

Just like the wedding season thing, you take it when you can.
