What is the best way to go about reusing video footage? Can't Post

How do I get permission to reuse video footage from a previous shoot?
I notice some here say they use old footage from other shoots in other projects.
Does the client own the footage in the end or should the video company.
Any light here would be grateful. ; )
Thanx DR

Oy, again with the copyright issues!
In general, you own the footage, provided you were an independent contractor and not an employee. However, it's best to have this spelled out in your contract.
In addition, I would never use footage of a client in any way that would be embarrassing to them (e.g., sending it to "America's Funniest Home Videos") without getting their permission first.

Doug Graham

Hi David,
Using previous footage you took can get you in trouble.
If a company paid you to shoot footage, it's there's. Unless as Doug
mentioned your are able to use it contractually.
In addition if the footage is not yours, and its known characters or product
unless you arre willing to pay for royalties it would not be to your advantage to use this.
A while ago on this site there was disscussion regarding music on wedding video,
again same thing, you need permission, music co's dont always check unless it really hits big.
but its good to keep it clean and try to get permission from the owner.
What is your intent for using the footage?
jes

I consider the footage belonging to the client, however, I
usually put a clause in the contract allowing myself to use it
"for promotional purposes" Otherwise, I'd ask their permission.

I used to think so, until I actually read the copyright laws on this. If you are an independent contractor (NOT an employee), then the footage is yours, unless your contract says otherwise.
But, as I said before, it's still best to have the rights issues spelled out in advance, to prevent any disputes later.

Doug Graham
