What would you charge? Can't Post

I got an interesting request for a video today. It's from a company that provides poker tournament services to bars & restaurants. The bars pay this company to come in and run poker games, and the patrons play for free.

They want a dvd to run the games. It will display the current round, minimum & maximum bets (blinds), chips in play and their color & value, and a timer to show how much time is left in the round. There are to be 15 rounds, 30 minutes each with two breaks adding up to about 40 minutes. Needless to say, the video will be nearly 8 hours long.

How much would you charge for this video? By the hour or a flat rate? Obviously there won't be any kind of camera work, just designing & animating the setup. I have a feeling this project is going to take me quite a while to finish (20-40 hrs, not including render times). And will I be able to fit the final production on a dual layer dvd, presuming the bit rate is low enough?

Are they providing any of the graphics, or would you have to create all of those too? If you have an approximate idea how long this is going to take, simply multiply by what you figure your time is worth and add a little padding for unexpected complications, and there's your fee. I'd also suggest discussing what rights you'd reserve for using some of your material in any future such projects.

As for fitting all this on one DVD, that seems unlikely. By my calculations, even on a dual-layer discs your maximum bit rate would be around 2400 kb/sec or so, which isn't going to yield very good image quality. Might be better to just put this on an extended-play VHS tape, if they'll go for that option. Otherwise, I'd recommend at least two discs, or maybe three discs since there are two breaks. Three single-layer discs gives you a bit rate around 3800 kb/sec, which is marginally adequate.
