It can get pricey, I had a project derailed when I wanted to use some footage from the Ed Sullivan show form 1950's $5,000 a minute and that was only US video rights. ouch. : I'll bet Hal Landen could help you with this, but I know a little on the subject. Footage appears to cost from $30/second to $80/second, usually with a 10-second minimum. You may be restricted on the number of airings allowed, or your initial payment might only cover, say, two airings. It's extremely discouraging unless you have a major budget to do the kind of work you're talking about. Copyright permission is a separate issue. There's copyright for the music, and then there's copyright for the *performance*. I tried to get permission from the YellowJackets to use a couple of their tunes, and the band leader was amenable, but the record lable which owned the *performance* on the album was not. : The possible good news is that the copyright rules for PBS are more lenient. I would suggest that you affiliate yourself with a public television station if at all possible. If you can do it through their auspices, you might find that access to this kind of historical footage is a lot less painful to acquire. : Good luck! : Steve S. : : Could anyone help with information regarding the making of documentaries. I have been wanting to produce videos on famous musicians but have never known where to start. For instance; The majority of the footage would have to come from either TV or live recordings. Where do I go for these and what would the cost be? Also where do I stand as far as copyrights are concerned? Would this be taken into account when I buy the footage or would I have to pay a percentage for each video sold? : : Any help on this subject would be gratefully appreciated.
