lists of videographers Can't Post

On Thursday, I got a call from a national TV show in New York asking if I could do a shoot for them on Saturday in Nashville (I am about 80 miles from there, and I gladly did the shoot). I have no idea how they found me. However, it made me wonder if I could get into some national list of available shooters so that this might happen more often. Could anyone give me some direction about this? Thanks. Joe

Joe,
There are a number of such lists like mandy.com BUT I know
very few producers who would hire someone that way. The vast
majority of these kinds of calls are referrals. Someone knew
someone who knew someone who knew you. I've been hired that
way. It's a networking kind of business. I think it is
unlikely that you were called just because someone found
you in a directory.
But if anyone has been hired from one of the freelance directories,
please say so.

Thanks, Hal. I thought it might benefit others to post the substance of the call that I received from the producer. The call was brief and to the point, and I got the impression that the caller was working from a prepared list of questions. The original call came right at closing time (if there is such a thing) on Thursday.
They asked the following questions:
1. Can you do a shoot in Nashville Saturday? Yes.
2. What do you charge? $100 an hour.
3. What format do you shoot in? MiniDV.
4. Good, I like that. What kind of camera? Sony VX2000. (The field producer called a little later and said he really likes that camera)
5. Do you have a light kit? Yes. (ARRI Softbank IV)
6. Do you have a lavalier mic? Yes. (Two wireless with dual receiver and two wired)
7. Can I fax you a shot list now? Yes.
Whereupon she sent me the shot list, and requested that I call her right back.
8. Can you do this shoot at 3:30 and have the tape to FedEx before 5:00 when they close? No. That's impossible! We need to move the shoot back to 1:00.
9. Okay, we want you to do it. I'll call and move it to 1:00 and call you back to confirm.
We started setting up at 1:05 and I got the tape to FedEx at 4:53, and we didn't waste a minute. When I expressed to a colleague my amazement at their initial request, someone suggested that maybe they were testing me a little. Oh, well, I'd like to get more business like that. I hope this helps someone. Joe

This is actually quite common. Shows like Montel, Jerry Springer, etc. need shooters to go to the homes of guests to get background shots and interviews that they use to spice up the television segments. I have never actually gotten one of these calls, but another company that has been is business longer than me has done this 2 or three times.
