(VX1000) VTR mode won't work... Experienced filmers please share your knowledge!

I have a Sony VX 1000 in good condition. I bought the VX a year ago and began filming skateboarding with my friends. However, I stopped filming for several months. When I stopped, I put the VX in it's cushy, protective bag and stored it in a closet. I just brought the camera out today in hopes of selling the camera. When I was looking the camera over I found a problem. I turned on the camera, setting it in "camera mode". No problems there, worked fine, nice clear picture. Now when I set the camera to "vtr" mode I ran into a problem. When I pressed play to see if it would play back, nothing happened. Just a black screen. I tried pressing "rewind", "fast forward", etc., but nothing would happen. Just blackness. I tried ejecting the tape as well, but, again, nothing happened. Upon pressing the eject button, the only thing that happened was the little plastic door flipped open, but the tape didn't budge and I didn't hear any mechanical noises from inside.
If anyone has seen this problem before and/or could give me any advise, that would be really appreciated!
