1000-focus Can't Post

I have had my 1000 for about 2 years. I use it more for family use than anything. I also have a three-hundred dollar sony 8mm camera. I recently completed the task of transferring all the video that I have shot through the years to vhs. As I watched the hours and hours of video shot with the inexpensive sony, I never once saw it get out of focus - not once! Before now, focusing has never hardly entered my mind. I thought focusing simply meant twisting the little black thing and getting a clear picture before shooting, and then leaving the focus on auto pilot. Now that I have the vx-1000 I stay in a freak. I am confident enough to do weddings, reunions, and small stuff as far as my ability goes, but, the few that I have done have given me terrible problems with focus. Question: Why on earth would a $300 camera give such great focusing while a $3000 camera keep me nervous? Is there any solution to the vx-1000 focusing weakness other than just knowing a few tricks of the trade. Honestly, I get tired of doing those tricks. I would hope that I could get the service for the price.
