A new PD 170 user Can't Post

I found this forum a while a go and it looks as if it is really what I was looking for. I have rented PD 170s for a project and I got so attached to it I parted with the money and got one. I primary have been working with all kinds of sound and I compose for TV and video as well.

The amount of knowledge flowing in this forum is amazing and I just wanted to introduce myself.

All the best

SONY PD-170 OWNERS - BE WARE

Have any of use notice a slight hum / buzz coming from your LCD screen? Believe it or not, Sony goofed again on the sound issue with some PD-170s. The LCD screen when open will produce a slight hum/buzzing sound in some units. Not all of them have it.

This buzzing/hum sound is because of the poor insulation of the circuitry inside the LCD screen which cause to emmit this faint hum/buzz. And this buzzing/hum does get recorded in the tape !!!!!

Not all units have it. And the units that have the problem, show this problem as intermittent. Depending on the position of the LCD screen, the sound may or may not be heard. This sound could get worse in the long run.

To see if you have the problem, using headphones, listen to the sound with the LCD in the close position. Then open the LCD and listen to the sound. Change the position of the LCD screen and again listen to the sound. Repeat this procedure a few times with the LCD screen placed in different positions. Close the LCD screen sometimes to differentiate the sound in the close and open position because the problem is not present when the LCD screen is closed.

The buzzing/humming sound was not acceptable to me and I shipped my brand new PD-170 to Sony in Georgia. Sony is acknowledging the problem and provided a fix for it free of course by double insulating the LCD electronics.
However, it took me to ship my PD-170 twice to Sony before it could get fixed. They are paying for the shipping both ways.

When you do the test, do it in a quiet room.

Nope no problem / difference at all (VCR or CAM both equally quiet). Even the zoom ring appears to run better than on the once I have rented in the past. But then my serial no. starts with 122.

I never said that the problem will be when the camera is in VCR mode. It is present when the LCD screen is out and in a particular angle. If you are doing weddings, then this is no problems because people would tend not to notice it. If you are doing broadcast, you got a problem if you have the slight hum caused by the LCD screen.

Just tested both situations just to be sure. Thanks for the report it sure would have been easier to get it fixed when it's new than in 6 months.
