Camera for stage productions? Can't Post

My two sons are currently using a VX-1000 to record stage productions. They are interested in purchasing a better camera for this type of work if possible. These events are difficult due to dramatic and contact changes in lighting. They need an additional camera that will work well in low light. It needs to also be able to adjust quickly once the subject is hit with a spot while standing in the dark (75% image in light). Easy access to exposure controls would also be nice as well. Any thoughts? -Reed
