Camera mounted shotgun Can't Post

Just got an AT4073a shotgun mic for my Sony 2000. Normally I will use it with a boom, however sometimes it will just be me alone. In that case, is it possible to get good sound with the mic mounted on the camera shoe? Or is there a better workaround?

How do you engage the low-cut filter? There are not instructions that I have found.
Thanks.

Re: [Brackish] Camera mounted shotgun [In reply to] Can't Post

I have the new Beachtek DXA-6vu with phantom power, two xlr channels and a vu meter for each channel.

Thank you very much for your prompt and very detailed answer. In a few days I will be using this to shoot a college play. I guess I will just plug one channel into their mixing board and perhaps use the AT 4073 shotgun to pick up audience noise on the other channel. However I am told that the mixing board is only picking up music, not the actors (Midsummer Nights Dream). Hmmm.....

Re: [Brackish] Camera mounted shotgun [In reply to] Can't Post

I will shoot it on Saturday because I found out it would take more time than I had available Tuesday.

This is a case where the production person asked me to do a video of the play. I have talked to the sound man and the stage manager. I told them what you said.

They have one stereo mike that they want to put in the balcony and will possibly also use pzms to the sound board, where they will control the mix. I can plug in there.

Since I have two channels, I gave them the following choices for my camera:

Would you rather have stereo or
one track picking up audience noise or
one track as a "safety" at a lower volume so you can use it in post production
if the main track is too loud?

(come to think of it, the last is probably not a problem if they are minding their mixer)
How'm I doin'?
But my concern is that the balcony will be just too far away.

Thanks for all your help

Rich

All I have is the 4073a (and a lavalier), and I will be shooting as far back as possible, to get everything in the frame. Two other people will be shooting cut-aways. (cut-ins?)

Have you seen this?:

They talk in there that it could be helpful to attend the rehearsal.

If possible, I would highly recommend attending the final dress rehearsal. This can answer a lot of you questions in regards to setup.

Personally, I shoot recitals and plays with 2 cameras, 1 wide, and one up front for cutaways.
I do a full record of the final dress rehearsal using both cameras, and get full audio capture.
Then I show up to record one of the LIVE perormances (1 camera only) to get actors getting ready, crowd shots, additional footage for camera angles, and crowd audio.

I then mix all of this together in post. It is actually rather easy for me to do, and although a little bit more filming than others do, it gives me plenty of backup audio and video if needed.

Also by filming the final dress rehearsal, I am able to move around freely and get angles and shots that I couldn't do during an actual perfromance.

Re: [MLiebergot] Camera mounted shotgun [In reply to] Can't Post

Shot the play last night.
Started Okay, with an xlr cable from soundboard to Beachtek, and the 4073 on the other channel for audience reaction. After 10 minutes, was no longer getting any sound on Beachtek vu meters. Then I noticed that I had set the Beachtek channel coming from the soundboard to mic rather than line. Looks like I may have blown the circuitry in the Beachtek. No audio after that.

When are dress rehearsals for plays, usually? The night before it opens?

For the one that I am doing in 2 weeks, it is teh day before the openeing night. This has been the norm in most circumstances so far.
