Just to let you know, noone in our studio thinks that the new HDV even comes close to a Digibeta camcorder. The line resolution in the HDV camera may be better but there are a miriad of other factors you need to consider including a picture histogram, colormetry, knee, low lighting capability, etc. etc. In all those respects a Digital Betacam camcorder is superior than the Sony HDV format. Basically a HDV camcorders is a DV camcorder with a 100% sharper image. But sharpness is not everything. On top of that , you have serious compression problems with the Sony HDV camcorder. Also you have to remember that HDV is not really true high definition. Being that said, Digibeta is a Standard Definition format which looks superior to HDV. There is no quetion about this. I haven't any experience with the new Sony camera yet, but I would think that the DV footage would look as good if not a little better than many DV cameras. In an article I read they talked about aquiring in HD to edit and distribute on digiBeta. Since the HD looked better than digiBeta, the footage looked better when put on digiBeta, then in raw digiBeta. Since HDV has two times the scan rate than DV, I would think that the DV footage down converted would look better than DV on a similiar camera. That is the key, the camera. I wouldn't expect it to look as good as SD footage using a $35,000 SD camera with 1/2 inch or better chips, but compared to a VX2100, xl2 or PD170, I would think it would look a little better. Factoring in lighting and camera work. Just a thought.
