At the moment im using L-type non original Sony battery that doesnt have grove on its sides. As long as the battery has 7.2Volts output, and 2 pins female connectors (holes) it will fit your camcorder. But if ur question is asking me in more specific which type of battery will suit this or that, i dare not answer your question as i myself do not attempt to try as many batteries as possible to do this business... You may ask ppl in this forum if your specific battery u r aiming will be suitable. Also, if u r desperate with battery, one possible way is to cut the casing of your battery and find the replacement from Dick Smith electronic and do some major soldering. Im in Syd 2000, and always chillout in Cook n Phil (St Mary`s cathedral church) when off working, if ur familiar with that spot, u can come and hook me up sometimes and i help u out with your problem. my email is hendra.w.noor@gmail.com

O yeah i forgot to mention that i also use NP-F970 and 770 (4400mAh) L-series battery that i initially use them for my VX2100... Im not interested to taking any advantage from u, so think abt if ur going to resell your camcorder in the future, grinding the compartment may not be cool step coz the compartment cosmetic will be a bit ugly... But if ur going to keep the camcorder with u forever, grinding it maybe positive due to discontinuity of some early stage batteries in the future (perhaps) and u will find it hard to get a replacement... I did try one non original battery, used once but the next day it doesnt power up anymore... Sony is a bit sucks coz they put something in their device that locks the user to use their original part only...like their DVD player, it can only play original DVD, not a pirated or some home made one...in other words they r sensitive...
Back to the battery, some non original battery like Lenmar gives u 2 years warranty, they r pretty strong and coz about $70-$100 (Include shipping to ur door). perhaps in 2-3 years ur already thinking of selling ur instrument away and get a better one. Doing some math about your return of investment not pure investment, buy some extra batteries will coz u a bit more but when u resell your camcorder, it returns your dough more than wat ur trying to save.. I ground my compartment coz im thinking of using it till the trash bin calling it home...and i got the tool from my design department where im working with so why not trying something fun...but if ur insist of doing it, im more than happy to fulfill ur need.
