How to find if new cam is actually new ? Can't Post

Hi,
I was wondering, is there a way when you buy a new camcorder like the vx2000 to find out if its never been use ? Or to find out if its refurbished ?? Assuming you're buying it from a complete crook : )
Thanks,
Adam.
