Interval Recording Can't Post

I want to do some interval recording of some growing plants. I am thinking about using progressive scan (so I can get better frames grabs if I want them) and something like .5 seconds every 30 minutes so I think this could take two or three days of taping to get the footage I want. Since this is the first time I've tried this, I am just guessing at the the proper settings. After I get the footage, I will speed it up or slow it down with Adobe Premeire to fit my needs.

Now here is the question. On a Sony TRV900 or a VX2000 or a PD170, does the recording drum run the entire time or does it stop between the recording segments? I hate to cause undue wear and tear on camera. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [Dieps] Interval Recording [In reply to] Can't Post

My recommendation is to try it and see for yourself.

I have done some interval recording with my VX1000. As I recall the camera appears to turn itself on and then shut off at intervals, wear is not a huge concern. Looking at my PD150, the longest interval it shoots is every 10 minutes. The shortest record time is .5 secs.

With Sony cams can't you shoot without a tape? If you can spare a PC for a few days, you could use software like Scenalyzer Live to capture a frame (or two) at a set interval (as I understand, it's entirely configurable). The Scenalyzer software is solid, so reliability shouldn't be a factor. Just a thought...

Re: [mjeppsen] Interval Recording [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, Matt, my setup will be out in the middle of a corn field and I need two cameras going; one for the control area and one for the treated area. I suppose I could set up generators and all the stuff a big production company would /could do but this is a home grown (pun intended) project.

Yesterday, I simulated my project by setting up my PD170 in the back yard and focused on a new leaf that was opening on a tree. Used .5 recording time with a 30 minute interval and found the 960 battery lasted about six hours. Only about 12 seconds worth of taping in that time makes me think something must be running the entire time (flip out screen was closed). Also, the hour meter added one hour to the THREADING time. Oh well, I guess these cameras were meant to be run so I'll just let it run.

I won't be doing this project for a few weeks so maybe I will come up with a better idea. If not, I'll do the best that I can. Then again, that's what we always do isn't it? Thanks agin for the ideas.
