PD170 users come in please.....question for you Can't Post

I just got a new PD170Sly (don't you just LOVE that cam!Tongue) Do any of you use custom presets? I use some in my vx2000, but don't know what would be good for the 170.

Any ideas?

Also, does it never go on standby? I've had it on for about 20 minutes now and it hasn't gone on standby yet.

thanks....velma

In the professional line of cams (PD's, DSR's) after 5 min the head stops but the cam will stay active in all other respects. Only the consumer line goes to sleep after 5 min. That is an extremely important difference for those that use the cam as a video source also and/or record on another unit or send to a remote display.

Sparkster...

Let me ask you another question....since you also use FCP. In order to capture 2 channels from the 170 into FCP, do you have the channel switch (up there by the mic, line, etc) set on channel 1 & 2? Or just on channel 1?

And then when you capture it in FCP, you capture Ch 1 & 2? Am I right here?

If you're capturing the footage using the camera as a deck it won't make any difference. Is that what you're asking?

The only time you need to worry about your switch is during the recording phase. Shotgun on one channel and lav on the second ... put the record switch to ch1. (Assuming the same as 150.) In the 1&2 position you're going to get what ever is coming in on channel1 and it will feed to both 1 and 2.

No, I don't use the camera as a capture deck. Okay, this is what I did. I recorded onboard cam(shotgun) on input 1, wireless mic on input 2. Set record switch to channel 1. The audio controls showed two channels being recorded.

When I captured it into FCP (not using the cam), I captured ch 1 & 2. But when I played it, there was only audio on channel 1. Nothing on channel 2. Any ideas what I did wrong?

Wish I did, but no ... you did everything right. You're an old pro at FCP so you've probably opened up both channels in the viewer/canvas or whatever the hell it's called ... to see if there was an audio wave form.

Just for the heck of it ... try a one minute clip and just set it to record channel 2 and see what happens.

Hi Velma

We just got 2 170's and love them as well. I do not use any of the pre-sets. The only thing I don't like about them is in low light the auto focus is not good at all. We also miss the 20X zoom we had with the GL2's but the quality of the video is awesome.

Re: [velma] PD170 users come in please.....question for you [In reply to] Can't Post

I actually purchased my 150 before my 2000. I love having two XLR inputs without the hassle of adding additional equipment/adapters to the camera. The only reason I went with a 2000 as opposed to another 150 was that I wanted the ability to go into LP mode if I needed, but in retrospect ... it's never been an issue.

If my camera were to die today I would probably look for a used 150 or 170. I really do like that camera.

Velma getting the first 170 was a hard sell but once my wife saw the difference in low light, switching over to all sony was an easy sell.

Hi velma.

Use the same custom presets with the 170 that you do with the 2000.

About it not going into standby ... THIS IS SUCH A NICE FEATURE
AS COMPARED TO THE 2000! Once you start getting used to
using the PD, and you switch to using the VX, you're
gonna be continually thinking to yourself "this damn thing keeps shutting
down!"

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to using that feature today. Looks like I'll have to go out and get myself an extra battery, though. But it will be soooo worth it!

I don't know where Velma got her's, but I got mine from B&H (using the link at the top of this page of course!) for $2999.95 less $300 rebate from Sony.

B&H LINK

Click on the "Add to Cart for lower price" link to see the $2999.95 price; the Sony rebate is still available as well, your final price (after you wait several weeks for the rebate) is $2699.95. A sweet deal!

You should let us know how you like it not shutting down in the
field.

Also, do you know the quick way to wake up the VX after
it has shut down? You probably do but just for anyone
else following along ...

I hit the record button to wake it up. Is there something else?

At least on the VX2000, you KNEW when the camera shut down, because the LCD would shut off, so it wouldn't catch you by surprise. I simply turned it on/off, so I'd be ready for the next shot.

When I rented the PD170, like Bob says, the head or whatever would shut down, but you had no idea, so there was a delay on your next shot. That sucks, but it is on no way the same level of sucking as the FX1. That was probably the #1 reason for me deciding the FX1 wasn't suited for me as a wedding videographer. You had no idea when it shut down like the PD170, but it took several seconds to start recording again.Mad That simply did not work for my shooting style...several seconds means the scene is long gone much of the time.

If they can solve that standby-to-startup time with the new V1, I'd be very tempted.

Now, if they could have simply made a standard def PD-190, with native 16:9, 20x lens, 24p, and a bigger 16:9 LCD...they would have made my dream camera! Cool

But even as-is, for $2699 the PD-170 has got to be the best deal in wedding cameras on the market. I'll probably keep renting them for the remainder of my weddings, until I can afford to buy something new.

I press the "photo" button. I never have a memory chip inserted and it just reactivates the cam and dutifully takes a pic to store nowhere.

Dumbest thing on the VX is the ability to save a silly frame grab to a chip IMO (next to the auto power down "feature" of course).
