I have achived less than pristine results running the VX1000 at SS 1/30. Aliased edge-artifacts were noticable at that rate.
Shoot at a clean shutter speed. Don't use gain. Process the video in post using CineLook or the like (Which can include a field blending conversion from 29.97fps to 24fps, back to 29.97 for your final output.)

: First of all, when the XL1 is in progressive mode, it does not really look like film. It just looks like video running at a progressive rate close to the 24fps rate of 35mm film. But if you have a VX1000 and want a similar effect, switch the the shutter to 1/30 or less.
