Hello,
I've had the exact same problem, just when I was on an important assigment in the Arab Emirates. The fault is the failure of the flexible connector between viewer and main housing (you can see this when you lift the viewer) I had it repaired here in Belgium for about 125$ of wich 12$ were spares and the rest working hours. For a temporary solution, if you need your camera urgently, you can buy a battery operated TV-walkman (i.e.Casio) and connect it to your VX1000. It worked for me! Best of luck.
