Recording direct to hard disc Can't Post

Has anyone had any experience with the new video hard discs that allow you to record directly onto a hard drive, bypassing the tape?

According to the manufacturers, this saves so much time because you eliminate the capture phase of video editing, simply plugging the video hard disc into a firewire connection, and then start to edit.

I need info on the viability of such systems and have yet to find any objective reviews. This sounds like a tremendous time - and money - saver... no more need to buy tape at around twenty five or thirty bucks each for the DVCAM tapes!

There are countless posts about this, so you might want to do a search. In any case, I use Nnovia drives and do not use tape anymore. The 100G drive holds about 7-1/2 hours of video and the battery lasts for about 6 hours. Partially dependent on system speed, transferring the files to the computer takes about 6-7 minutes per one hour of footage compared to one hour captured to one hour transferred. I own three of these and am probably getting a fourth by Nov/Dec.

The A2D models allow you to use both analog and digital. The other models, which are a lot less, are 1394 only, which is what I use. There are also versions with A/B packs on them as well.
