Tape dropouts-need help Can't Post

For several years now, I have been having on going problems with my Mini DV tapes having moderate to severe dropout on my VX 2000 cameras. It seems to be rampant in the first ten minutes of the tape, with squiggly lines and dropout usually on the right side of the image on screen. After that portion of tape, it seems to go away. I have had to work around this by laying black on the first ten minutes, then shooting my events. Needless to say this is a waste of tape.

This is causing me a lot of headaches, and ruined shots in weddings that I have done. I use TDK tapes, and have cleaned the heads with the Sony head cleaning cartridge.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

You probably need a good tape path cleaning or a new drum assy. Take it to a service shop.

It's probably not the drum. There's a small brake assembly on the supply reel that deforms and causes major tape entrance problems at the begining of tapes. Also, check for a crack on you supply slider. another comon problem.

Hello Tim, thank you for that info. Do you have the service manual for the Sony DCR VX1000? If you do, do you know if the mechanical assembly and drum assy parts are the same as the later models such as the VX2000 or VX2100. I service equipment and get a lot of request for service for all these models. Since the VX1000 is old I don't know if sony still makes parts for this model and I was curious if parts from the later models can be used. I am trying to get the service manual in order to get part #s for parts, alignment tools and jigs, and procedures for tracking, tension, switching position and servo, etsc.. alignments. Hope to hear from you..much regards,

Wow! You "service equipment and get a lot of request for service for all these models" and you are asking on this forum for technical advice becase you don't have a manual!
Do you 'fix' lawnmowers in the other half of the shop?

The VX1000 uses Sony's D mech. And the VX2000, 2100, & TRV900 all use the newer C mech. Parts are readily Available for all the cameras. You can go to Sony's sight: https://servicesplus.us.sony.biz/Member.aspx Create yourself a user name and password, you should be able to research parts by model and overhaul kits. A lot of times the service manuals don't include the mechanism adjustment manuals. They have to be ordered separetly.

Re: [Bob A] Tape dropouts-need help [In reply to] Can't Post

Well Bob, I don't have a service manual for the Sony DCR VX1000 YET! I do have one for the VX2000. I do get a lot of requests to service this camera, however, I have not service one YET. I do service electronic equipment of other formats: 8mm, Hi8, VHS, SVHS, DA88, 3/4", Betacam. I have just started looking into servicing DV and DVCAM fortmats because of the requests. In my previous post, I was not asking for technical advice, I was asking for information that I currently not have but will have with the help of good people who do value FORUMS like these. I don't know anything about you but from your arrogant remarks it seems you are a person that knows everything about electronics and heck probably everything. Well Mr. know-it -all, forums like this one do help, I have only been in this forum for two days and I like it. I can see you have 279 post. What do you do, critize on all of them?

"DA88" is that a Craftsman bagger model? Or did you mean the old Tascam audio recorder?
Or did you mean the video D-8 format?
I will be happy to sell you my VX1000 Service Manual for $65.00 if you like.

There are many online networks and factory service help-lines you could look into to answer technical question about particular models, parts interchangeability and recurrent, model specific, recurring problems. Most service folks are well aware of them. Do a little research or ask someone that has been in the business for a few weeks longer.

I am just not a fan of so called service techs experimenting on people's expensive gear after claiming to be qualified.
I don't know this fellow at all but I do see a bunch of recent posts where he infers that he is an experienced, knowledgeable service tech but yet he is asking, on this list, for tech info that is basic to any shop. Makes me wonder about the newest “expert du jour” doesn’t it make you wonder too?

"I am just not a fan of so called service techs experimenting on people's expensive gear after claiming to be qualified"

I don't experiment on people's expensive gear. Like I stated earlier I have not worked on the VX1000. I am getting the service manual, alignment tapes & tools because I have a used camera that I bought and that I need to work on. I might not be experienced as you claim to be, I might not have the technical network that you claim to know but the service on the equipment that I have done has been up to specs and acceptable by the client. In life when someone is down it is good to lend a hand, it brings good things.

Hey, I apologize for this drama, my intent was to inquire and get some help. Someone posts a question that he can help in, since he claims to have a lot of experience, and instead he prefers to ridicule me. What kind of person is this guy? He either is a young know it all punk, or an old bitter man. I bet people really love this guy. To put this to and end, I give Bob the victory and wish him well. Tim, thanks for your info earlier it gave me some help. Bob, just so you can sleep tonight and there after, know that you are the greatest.
