Teacher needs help - PD150 Video Quality Issue Can't Post

We are putting together a small imformational DVD on our school but are having a few quality issues. We DO have a new Panasonic HVX on the way but who knows when that will get here so I have to make do with what I have now so please no "wait until it comes in advice" Wink

We are using 'DV Pro', progressive set to 'off', digital zoom 'off', and 4:3 ratio viewing. (Please tell me if these settings are wrong to use)

Everything is set to 'Auto' are far as focus, AE, Shutter speed etc. but everything just has a noisey look to it overall. I know this camera is capable of much more so it must be me.

Also the problem may lie in the import into the computer. I use Final Cut Pro 5 and use a standard firewire connection. I am setting the import to 'Firewire NTSC Basic'.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thansks!!

Turn the gain off, or don't go any higher than about +6. If you're shooting inside the 150 usually wants to boost the gain up pretty high, and this will introduce noise.

The PD150 is renown for its lowlight performance, there are none better in the 1/3" 3 chip range of camcorders from any manufacturer, other than the PD170, but the difference is negligible. Even the latest HDV models can't match the low light performance of this camera. Have you viewed your footage on a tv screen or are you just judging the image on your pc monitor? Where was the footage taken, outside in daylight or under poor lighting inside? If you hook your PD150 directly to a tv and the footage looks good, then the problem must lie in the settings you are using for capture to your pc or in your edited output. What codec are you capturing with and does that match the project settings in FCP?
Just to add, to get the best out of the camera manual settings are desirable, but the PD150 holds pretty good auto functioning.

Rick.
