Chris, do a search on low light HD cameras here, as this has been discussed at length and still is, as it's an ongoing thing with HD cameras and low light. If you are a manual settings shooter then the Canon A1 will do well for you. if you are more of an automatic guy, then the Sony cameras will work better. Until recently i would have said that the Sony FX1/Z1 was the best low light HDV camera. but the recent release of the Z7U and of course the EX1, will prove that they are the best in low light. of course they are quite a bit more money than the V1U and such. Now as for HDV and low light, if you run manual settings you can eek out a better picture in low, light. but if you are shooting HD footage right now I would recommend one thing...Get a dimmable on camera light to use when needed. I still use my PD170 from time to time, for corporate shoots where they want 4X3 SD. But even when I used the PD170's/VX2100's exclusively, I still used an on camera light. it's great that the PD/VX line can almost see in the dark. But without light the image turns to mud. And video/photos need light, as it is a light based recording medium. Unfortunately all of us who shoot events for a living can't rely on the venues for proper lighting as many think that pitch black is romantic and never hire a lighting specialist to light the venue properly. So until either venues turn up the juice of couples hire lighting designers for their weddings we have to make due with using our lighting the best we can.
