VX-1000 PAL Can't Post

As I venture into the DV world, I'm hoping some of you can help an old dinosaur like me resolve a few questions.
1) I have an opportunity to buy a VX-1000 PAL cam at a great price? Good investment? Or better to buy a Canon XL-1
2) Is it true that you can modify the VX-1000 so it will record audio at 48,000?
3) In comparing Canon's XL-1 and Canon's GL-1, both seem to be very competant cameras. Aside from not being able to swap out lenses on the GL-1 are there any other drawbacks? (many lens attachments -- including anamorphic -- are availalbe for the GL-1 through Century Optics. Any reason to avoid them?)
Thank you in advance for your help.
