: : Can anyone tell me if there are any components inside the VX1000 which are likely to be sensitive to compas point direction! I've noticed that my camera's autofocus control is absolutely useless whenever the camera is pointing due South! : I have no idea what could cause that or how to fix it, but I do want to nominate it for "most wierd"; it is the strangest camera problem I've ever heard of. : I will mention that the earth's DC magnetic field of 0.5 gauss is very weak compared with many AC magnetic fields near appliances, etc. If it really is south-pointing related, I'd look around for something else in the environment- overhead high-tension lines running north-south for example? Or for some reason you tend to tilt the camera down when facing south, and a lens or circuit element is loose and falls out of position in that orientation. If this is not a joke...Put a magnet (loudspeaker..) near your camcorder and report us if it changes the behaviour of your autofocus. Such a magnet can easely generate (locally)10 times the earth magnetic field strength, so it should have an influence. How precise do you have to point to the south? What do you mean by useless (hunting...?). There is not a single element in the autofocus optics/electronics concept which is influenced by DC magnetic fields. Andre
