VX1000E lens clean/replace Can't Post

I am still rather fond of my old VX1000E but now have a problem. Contrast seems to be reducing and flare increasing. A careful inspection of the front elements of the zoom lens (with front glass removed) looks like the elements are dirty inside. This is not patchy like fungus but looks like thousands of small spots like dried dirty condensation.
Is it cleanable or is it replacement of the whole lens or zoom assembly? I'm guessing at a replacement cost equivalent of greater than $1000 as the parts are listed (not at Sony) at around $550 from partstore.com.
As over the years I have already replaced the complete tape transport and head assembly, zoom motor and various flexible connections to viewfinder, rear door and VTR control panel I have an otherwise perfect VX1000 and a new lens might be viable.
