VX1000 Audio Problem Can't Post

My VX1000 just developed an audio problem - there is static on recording, it sounds like electrical noise. This only occurs with a tape in the machine. The sound is normal when listening via headphones when no tape is in the machine, but put a tape in and the static is heard (it doesn't have to be actually recording to hear the noise). Same whether listening to the internal mike or when an external mike is plugged in. Could this be a "degaussing" problem?
