You want to make sure that you use a stereo 1/8th inch mini plug for a mono plug can create problems for your camera...You will need an XLR to stereo mini adapter cable to use an external mic and possibly a phantom power unit depending on the mic of your choice.
: I want to use an external microphone,instead of the on-cam mike,when I shoot.How do I do this or can I?

:pete, all you have to do is open the light grey rubber flap on the right hand forward section on the handle, just behind the mike.
