VX2000 audio at wedding reception--need advice

I bought the VX2000 back in May when I came out of retirement to do a wedding video and realized that my usual second camera, a Sony Hi8, was NOT working. I played with the VX2000 for a few days prior and LOVED the clarity of the footage. Shot the wedding, used the VX2000 at the reception, and put the tapes on the shelf for several months until the family got around to getting me the rest of the stuff I needed to edit. When I DID edit I noticed that at one point at the reception I must have been RIGHT in front of the band's speakers and the sound became terribly distorted. After that there was this Wa-Wa kind of wave effect that went on with the sound for a while. I NEVER had this happen with my Panasonic AG456. I am doing another wedding soon. Is there anything I can do to avoid this? Why did it happen? Did the gain just go ballistic and I needed to power down the camera to reset it? I am the first to admit that I do not know enough about all the settings on this camera (is there another user's guide besides the manual available?) I have a Sennheiser MKE 300 that I have used for years on the AG456--should I use IT with the VX2000 at the reception? If so, should I put a mono to stereo adapter on it? I've read through this board for references to audio--and saw a post where several people said the on board mike on the VX2000 was NO GOOD in noisy crowd situations. I'd just like to know if anyone DOES ever go with the on board mike at a wedding reception and if they've had an experience similar to mine with that waffling sound syndrome? Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
