VX2000 lighting settings Can't Post

G'day all.
I need to film a tricky subject. - A static jet engine with afterburner being periodically fired to produce 100 foot flames.
I', using a SONY VX2000.
Subject is being shot at dusk, under halogen lights.
Auto setting last night made the shot go dark for a couple of seconds when the massive flames erupt while the light re-adjusted, and ditto once the flame stops.
Both shots were fine once the camera adjusted.
Challenge is that the show last for only four minutes, so don't have a lot of time to play with settings, I'm still a bit green on the manual light settings.
Any help appreciated

Cheers
