VX 1000 Time code Problems Can't Post

The question is: Is it the camcorder or the Sony Mini DV Tape that causes the drop outs of time code. Playing back recordings on brand new tapes and displaying the time code on a monitor, I notice the time code at times will disappear ( --:--:--) and then return. This is intermittent and occurs often while in ff and rewind, but also at times when running at normal speed. Needless to say that this problem really can mess up an edit or capture attempt using Premiere/DV Gate. My Camcorder has been in for service and new mini DV tapes are being used, but the problem persists from time to time. Can anyone point to the exact problem going on here ? Thanks
