Mike,
Your help was indispensable!!! I gave my engineer friend the layout you
gave me and he had fixed the problem in TWO hours and did it for FREE!
I went from paying $55.00 for the part and $90.00 in labor ($270.00 if they had
to 'send it out) to paying nothing and having a potentially HUGE problem into a
very minor inconvenience. My friend told me that it was relatively easy to fix
and with the right tools the lay person could do it. The way SONY described it
the whole process would have been very expensive and time consuming. It could
not have worked out better. I was really worried because the SONY dealer here
in Hawaii takes forever and there work is sub par. Thanks again for the help
and let me know if I can re-pay the favor.
George
P.S. All my friend had to do was fix two (2) bad wires in the ribbon and
PRESTO...no problem...I didn't even need to buy the part

Re: New Viewfinder ribbon part [In reply to] Can't Post

: "Repairing The VX-1000 Viewfinder" in the Free Library
Just a point about this - the part number, as it stands, is thus:
1-656-400-13, and it used to be 1-656-400-12. The new part is A. less likely to fail after heavy use as there's much less twisting and folding going on, and B. more expensive than the older part (although the $55.52 stated in said article is the current price - it's for the -13).
The original viewfinder ribbon is almost straight except for a kink at one end but is folded twice at right angles when installed to follow the correct path. The new one runs in almost a square pattern, similar to if you fold the old ribbon in its relevant points with your fingers, like three quarters of a square.
Having recently done this repair twice (to two different cameras) :) I notice the page doesn't mention the fact that the new part is different to the original; this may cause some confusion for novice repairers, who may worry that they have the wrong part or try and fold the new one the wrong way - it follows a similar path, but not in the same way.
Regards,
Kieran Morrissey
