Widescreen anamorphic Can't Post

First trials with Centruy anamorphic shows slight vignetting to left of frame and focus out at telephoto end of zoom but otherwise image very clear. Looks like it will struggle in low light. I can forget using a glydecam with this beauty!

BUT!!! How on earth to get the "squished" image unsquished onto a dvd is a problem. Fusing to .avi and importing to DVD Workshop 2 results in a 4:3 sqished burnt image and the idea of buying the Century lens was of course to get to widescreen.

Any ideas would be appreciated. DVDW2 fields for output to widescreen are greyout out and methinks there is a way of "tweaking" DVDW2 to burn to dvd in widescreen.

Workshop has a right click facility in edit of setting the output display with three dialogue boxes, two of which are greyed out . The first (greyed out) says 16:9. The second second tv screen with three choices around letterboxing pan and scan( none of which help) and thirdly a widescreen option which is greyed out.

Are you able to get a 16:9 edited image on W2 to burn to widescreeen dvd? If so it would be extremely helpful to know how.

The other points are not of great concern to us at present but to answer:

Vignetting we find is at wide angle end of focal length
The clips are very smooth without a glidecam
Low light issue because of squished image difficult to assess levels in lcd

Re: [Brackish] Widescreen anamorphic [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi. Pogress. Rather than answer all your pionts we have had some success in that we have filmed using the anamorphic, captured in Pinnacle LE and burnt to disc using both the authoring in LE and after fusingi then burning, after import, by DVD Workshop 2

Result is that BOTH burnt discs "unsquish" the image but do not fill the flull 16:9 screen on a flat LCD ( Sony Bravia) There are black bands left and right.Iie it is not letterbox

So we have a widescreen image off the anamorphic but it does not represent the full 16:9 width image that can be permitted by the widescreen tv.

Re: [Brackish] Widescreen anamorphic [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for your help and for anyone else who thinks of using the Century anamorphic with the VX2100 and wonders how to get it to fit a plasma or lcd 16:9 this is the route we have found with Liquid Edition.

Capture the footage in standard 4:3 format. Do Not capture in 16:9 mode
Edit and burn the timeline wither to disc or hard drive
Download the freeware IFOEDIT http://www.dvdr-digest.com/articles/42_1.html
That explanation will cover the mechanics of converting ( flagging) the appropriate dvd file to 16:9
Save the newly flagged file and burn the dvd from nNero or something like it.

We are trying to re-enter the dvd files as MPEG2 back into DVD Workshop 2 burn from there.

We have yet to fully test the software flag but all looks good so far.

Having compared the Anamorphic to the 16:9 digital adjustment on the VX2100 which looses about 25% of pixels and streaches the image we are delighted with Century lens. The only concern is that we will have to limit the range of the zoom at both small and high focal lengths but that is a small trade off for the price as against dumping our excellent Sony cameras and having to upgrade to HDV at this stage.

Focussing can be done manually via the fixed lens ring or auto. We will be "brickwall " checking the range of the focal length focus accuracy this week but I must say the quality we have seen so far is really good.

Have consulted professional lens makers for film industry who say that anything as small as a 2.5 "lcd magnifier is difficult to use and that you get used to composing the squished image. Before we spend more dosh on equipment are checking this out but so far it is not diffiicult using the lcd or viewfinder without any addtional aid.

The vignetting starts to show very close to maxiximum low focal. Focusssing problems are about 15% maximum high focal with a marginal ( say half stop) difference evident . You would have to be a really critical MOB to spot the vignetting.

Are you going to move up to HDV or stay with 4:3 and buy an anamorphic?

The main benefit at the moment is that when I wake up in the morning afrter a days's shooting and look in the mirror I seem much slimmer than I used to be!
