XLR to Mini cable? Can't Post

I have a VX2000 and Sennheiser me66. I currently connect the Senny to my camera using a Studio XLR-BP adapter. As you might know, this doesn't work so well with a Steadicam, and it's just another thing I have to take off when putting my camera down. Why can't I just use an XLR to 1/4" mono cable? Wouldn't this do the same thing? Obviously I'd lose the level adjustment and the dual-input on the Studio 1 adapter but I could live with that. I'm not a huge audiophile so If there's an easy answer to why this wouldn't work I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,
Ben
