audio gurus: hiss on manual audio? Can't Post

Audio gurus! I have been performing live on locations with no AC power and recording on a sony consumer hi8 camcorder. I was going to buy a portable DAT to get better recorded audio (not to mention video too) when I was steered to the vx2000 and told to get a beachtek DXA6 so I can input my voice mike and my guitar pick-up. I tried it out in a store (on a vx2001) and it seemed ok. But then I read reviews that said there was a hiss in manual audio (www.digitaljournalist.org/issue0007/videosmith.htm). I assume I will be in manual audio, no? Anybody have any ideas or tips?
