depth of field Can't Post

How can I get shallow depth of field from the vx2000? Even with the shutter wide open the depth of field seems huge.
With a 50mm lens on a 35mm camera set to f/2 and focussed to about 7 feet I get 1 foot depth of field.
The manual for the vx2000 says the lens has an equivalent focal length range of about 46mm - 500mm when converted to a 35mm still camera.
It seems I should be able to get a shallow depth of field or does the iris work differently on the vx2000? I am only able to get a somewhat tight depth of field if I zoom all the way in, effectively (according to the manual) using a >500mm lens!
Am I stuck with relatively large depth of field, or am I missing something really basic?
Thanks
