The Sennheiser MKE300 is OK. It is a definite "improvement" over any digital handicam's on-board mic (these are designed to pickup sound in a wide variety of situations), and it is basically the best for the price range. If you're looking for something a bit nicer, try the Sennheiser K6 preamp with ME64 capsule, or ME66 capsule (longer shotgun). ME64 is a great sounding mic with a good pickup pattern that allows off-camera voices to still sound natural. The K6 preamp is self-powered with a AA battery, and a built-in bass roll-off (low cut) switch. The ME66 capsule on the K6 is a longer shotgun, and can be difficult to camera-mount due to its longer barrel, but may be better for rejection of extraneous environment noise, and more accurate dialogue recording. A good solution is buy one K6 preamp, and both ME64 and ME66 capsules for a bit of variety. Both these Sennheiser's are probably triple the price of the MKE300, though. I'm in Australia, so the prices here are much higher, but try Location Sound Corp in the States for prices.
