single chip Can't Post

Does anyone know how a single chip uses its pixels to get the color image?
I know how a 3 chip works using a prism to send 3 separate streams to each ccd. Each ccd is then effectively measuring only luminance.
Does a single chip need to use three pixels of the ccd to record color using a filter on each one (sort of the reverse of how a color tv works)?
Please help as I can not find info on it :(
