vx1000 viewfinder ribbon install gone wrong, looking for input

The problem started when I would only get an image through the viewfinder with it 1/4 of the way up. Having researched the vx1000 before I bought it used, I had heard well about the problem. I ordered the sony part and went right in to install it. After following the digitalskate.net instructions, a few tries later I'm pretty sure I got it in right. Problem is, after the install the viewfinder is completely black, no image at all. Did I not install it correctly, leave out a step, or possibly its not a faulty ribbon in the first place? I'm thinking maybe I roughed up the new ribbon after the first couple tries placing it correctly. Don't know how sensitive it is. Can anyone share their experience with this install ? I'm attempting troubleshooting before coughing up $500.00 bucks for a Sony repair, ouch.
