What is they best way to adjust the white balance. DO I need a white card or something.

Set white balance mode control to manual. Position a white poster board where the subject is (will be). Zoom in until the frame is filled with white. Press the white ballance "set" button (below the white balance mode select button). Beware of any subsequent lighting changes.

New user of VX2000. I want to use manual white balance and be able to adjust manual sound volume. I can't seem to get the sequence right where I can lock in the white balance and still adjust the sound? What am I doing wrong or is there a sequence of doung things that works?
