Chris and Trish are the best authors for After Effects books. If you are looking for an easier read, "Classroom in a Book" from the Adobe Press usually has a more basic step-by-step approach that may get you up and running easier. For the work you will do in After Effects, there is not much significant difference between NTSC and PAL, so don't worry about a book that appears to be geared to one format. Also I have to say, After Effects is a very powerful program and you could spend years getting to know it completely, but don't let that intimidate you. Once you learn the basics, you can add a lot of sizzle to your videos using their filters and animation presets. If you want some basic tutorials on special effects you can create, check out CreativeCow.com's tutorial section.
