The mic element in a boom mic is generally a shotgun. It's often enclosed in a "blimp", to reduce wind noise, and shock mounted to reduce handling noise. The boom operator's job is to point the business end of the mic down at the talent. He must keep the boom and the mic within a couple of feet of the people speaking, without letting it fall into the camera's field of view. You can make an inexpensive boom out of a window-washing pole. The mechanical concerns are, how do you handle the mic cable, and how do you attach the microphone mount to the pole.
