Boom Mic? Can't Post

         Hey guys,

I have a question about Boom Mic's........What kind of Mic are they putting on that pole? Is it a shotgun? Also, can I make one? By buying a nice Mic and putting it on the end of a pole and running the cable into the camera ( What kind of Mic.....Shotgun or Focused).......??? Or is there any cheap ones around? any were from $100.00 to $165.00? ANY INFO IS GREAT!

Thanks,
Fredo

How about a broomstick with a quality mic on one end + an iRiver taped to the handle?

The mic element in a boom mic is generally a shotgun. It's often enclosed in a "blimp", to reduce wind noise, and shock mounted to reduce handling noise. The boom operator's job is to point the business end of the mic down at the talent. He must keep the boom and the mic within a couple of feet of the people speaking, without letting it fall into the camera's field of view.

You can make an inexpensive boom out of a window-washing pole. The mechanical concerns are, how do you handle the mic cable, and how do you attach the microphone mount to the pole.

I liked an idea of broomstick. If you really have no budget, you can probably go for that. Check local music store for the rubber mount ($3 - 5). It will kill the handling noise.
As for microphone I would recommend a directional one (Sennheiser is my best choice).
