Compatability Issue w/Older JVC/JLIP and Laptop Can't Post
In the process of purchasing new Laptop. I have the JVC GR-DVL805 Camcorder with the JLIP video software. My problem is not only is the software out of date, but the newer laptops don't have an RS-232 connection port ... only USB. I'm in the process of purchasing a laptop and wonder what I have to do to make the camera, software and laptop compatable. Obviously, I could purchase a digital camera, but why waste such a great camcorder which already takes still shots!

Buying a digital camcorder is your best bet. Not even JVC provides JLIP drivers for anything beyond Win98.
Other possibilities include purchasing an analog to digital converter box (you won't have camcorder control, but will be able to dump footage into the computer for editing). Or you could get a capture card that also supports analog video capture. The most economical one I'm aware of is the Canopus ACEDVio card. See http://www.canopus.com

Oops. I should mention that the Canopus card requires a desktop computer, not a laptop.
