Editing Lab Can't Post

Over the years I've built up the editing lab in my classroom with a few macs purchased each year. Currently have 13 stations (G3's, G4's, and G5's). Have just been told that I'll be able to upgrade the G3's to G5's as well as purchase a couple more machines. There will also be some money left over to work with...my dillemma is that I don't want our (diehard "Windows Only" tech coordinator making any decisions on specific equipment). I need to know what a good clean setup would be for our upgrade? Right now all my machines are standalone, none networked. Would it be smart to network these machines with a central machine running OSX Server? I'd like to set up a central printer and scanner for the machines as well as use my firewire set up...Any where I can go to see how a professional lab is set up that I could maybe take some tips from? Any thoughts or suggestions?

Well,
I'm more of a Windows user and have went that path with my editing lab. I'm not sure where to point you for help, but I'm not sure if I would go with a central server for the systems, maybe central storage or central backup. The only thing that I don't like about a central server, is that if it goes down, then all your stations go down. I have 4 editing stations which can connect to a central snap server for backup purposes. All work is done on the station, and then can be stored for back-up or transfer to the server. All the systems are identical, so if users save their projects as designed, then they can transfer to the server and download to any of the other systems to continue if need be. Again, I am not very MAC literate so maybe this doesn't help much.

Good luck.

I was recently on a site visit at Rancho Bernardo High School in San Diego. Their digital media class has editors with FCP networked to server. The instructor Ross Kallen might have advice for you. Go to their website and I'm sure you'll find contact info .
